Corfu Holidays: Visit the Capital of the Ionian Islands
The Greek Islands host hordes of British travellers over the summer months, with a great number of visitors heading for places like Corfu, Zakynthos and Rhodes, to name but a few. Holidaymakers visiting Corfu have a couple of options depending on the type of holiday they and their families or travel companions are looking for. Visitors can either have a more family-oriented holiday in the resorts around the north of the island or they can head south to Kavos; the busiest resort on the island.

in and around Kavos are known for 18-30 holidays, as well as for family breaks away in one of the resort’s many hotels.
For those who do choose Kavos, a hectic nightlife is assured if they so desire. During the day holidaymakers can choose from a wide range of water sports and other daily excursions. The water sports taking place on the packed beaches are likely to include the pick of non-motorised and motorised fun on jet skis, paragliders or various inflatables, many of which can be seen speeding around in the distance. For travellers with the desire to get away from the beaches for an excursion, the Achilleion palace is the perfect destination to see on the way up to Corfu town for a day of sightseeing.
Built in 1890, the Achilleion Palace was the home of ailing aristocrat, Empress Elizabeth of Austria up until 1898. The palace has everything that could be expected of a stately home abroad including beautiful gardens that slope down towards the coastal road. The palace itself is a grand white building with regal marble columns, surrounded by mini statuettes of Achilles and other mythical Greek characters. The ornate palace is easily one of the main attractions of

Towards the centre of the island is the capital, Corfu town. Some visitors bemoan the fact Corfu lacks the classical ruins of some of its Aegean peers, but the island is in no way short of beautiful or historic architecture. Periods of rule by European neighbours, most notably the British and French, have left a unique architectural legacy with buildings like the Liston and the Grand Palace of St Michael and St George. The Liston was built to resemble Paris’ Rue de Rivoli and is probably one of the grandest promenades anywhere in the Greek territories.

. The palace was built in 1819 from Maltese limestone and now houses the museum of Asiatic art – a 10,000+ piece collection of artefacts from the private collection of diplomat Grigorios Manos. Other cultural highlights around Corfu town include the Paper Money Museum and the Byzantine Museum.
